1. I’m planning to have an epidural anyway, why should I take childbirth classes?
(KC): So that you know the best point in your labor to get an epidural. CBE read a lot of research into this stuff and new information is always coming out. There are “sweet spots” in labor where an epidural is the most effective, and
2. Do I need a Childbirth Class if I’m having a doula (like you) there?
(SG): Yes! Through the class you’ll learn techniques that work better when practiced over time. (KC): It’s the difference between training for a mountain climbing expedition or just winging it because you have a guide! It’s helpful to know what you can do now to get ready for your trip! (EH): [Doulas and CBEs] have different but very complementary roles. Every woman needs as much education (CBEs) and support (doulas) as possible!
3. Won’t you just tell me what I need to know?
(MD): There is so much to learn. (SG): Class helps you understand what your body will be doing and that can lessen fear and tension during labor! (MD): As a doula, I help you voice your opinions and reinforce your decisions. It’s important to know what options you have in advance of labor so you will have confidence in those decision and be empowered by your own birth experience.
4. I already know how to breathe (or, I learned breathe control from yoga, or voice lessons, or playing an instrument, etc.) so why do I need to take childbirth classes. (or I don’t think breathing a special way will help me)…
(EH): Childbirth class is definitely more than breathing! (KC): Breathing is a big part. So is moving, and eating, and drinking, and resting, and knowing how to handle back labor… (SG): What positions can help with labor discomfort. Where your partner can push/massage to help you be more comfortable. When you should go to your birth place. What your options are and how to communicate your preferences. What the normal variations of labor might look like. Different visualizations to use during your pregnancy and labor. Class is definitely so much more than breathing! No patterns to remember – you’ll learn to work with your body effectively. (MD): Your partner will also be more involved and supportive to you. Many people are surprised by what they learn or thought they knew, but really didn’t! (EH): You often meet new mom friends, people going through the same stage in life. If you do not have a childbirth education course, you will miss out on the information and often the friendships you might find on the way.
